How to Get Started with Repairs: Replacing the Freewheel on Your Bike

Do you find it challenging to change out the cassette on your bicycle? It doesn’t matter, since after you’ve read the lesson, it won’t be difficult for you to switch out the tools whenever you’re ready.

1. Take off the back wheel by moving the chain to the smallest flywheel and letting go of the fast release lever. This will allow you to take off the back wheel. After that, you are going to need a freewheel wrench in addition to a freewheel cover tool.
2. To remove the flywheel cover, first secure the flywheel wrench around the bigger flywheel, then insert the flywheel cover tool, and then remove the flywheel cover by turning it in the opposite direction of the clock.
3. To get rid of the old flywheel, first detach the lock ring, then either take the flywheel apart piece by piece or remove it in its whole. If you wish to save the old flywheel, tying it together using a cable tie is a nice method to do that.
4. Install a new flywheel: When installing the flywheels, ensure that they are installed in sequence from largest to smallest. This will guarantee that the flywheel parts are installed in the right order, and it will also ensure that the distance between each flywheel is the same. It is important to keep in mind that the flywheel’s front and rear halves must never be put in the wrong order. If you do not pay attention to the size of the card slot as well as the number of teeth that are etched on the outer side of the flywheel, the flywheel will not be inserted properly. In most cases, the number of teeth will be engraved on the exterior side of the flywheel.
5. Install the lock ring by fastening it to the side of the flywheel that is farthest from the center of the wheel. At first, you should tighten it by hand, and then you should use the flywheel cover wrench to further tighten it until it is secure. If you discover that it is difficult to fit the flywheel cover or that the threads beneath the flywheel cover are too short, check to see that the length of the freewheel body is set correctly. Whether the flywheel cannot be fastened even after the flywheel cover has been adjusted, you should also check to see if the specifications of the freewheel body are the same as those of the flywheel.
6. Tighten the flywheel: When locking the flywheel cover, you do not require a flywheel wrench. When the flywheel is turned counterclockwise, the jack on the freewheel body is able to give an adequate amount of resistance. It is important to keep in mind that the flywheel cover will need to be removed at some point, so avoid over-tightening it.
