LEARN HOW TO AVOID THE COMMON MISTAKES OF BICYCLE MAINTENANCE!(3)

This week is the third issue of learning how to avoid bicycle mistakes, let’s learn together!

8. Wiring wear

Trace wear is something we all don’t like to see. There’s nothing worse than seeing a cool bike that turns out to have worn out front derailleur routing. In most cases, the people who see it are in a bad mood.

Worn traces are a sign that you need to pay attention, the trace needs to be replaced, not that it can be saved, and once the trace is broken, it will only get worse. Make sure the cable routing caps are still securely attached to the brake and shift cables. Caps don’t cost a lot of money, so there’s no reason to leave the wire leads exposed all the time.

When you are pinching the routing cap, be careful not to pinch it too tightly or you may break it. Normal bicycle cable tongs are fine at this point. You can use it when building operations, not those kitchen shears or hedge shears.

9. Pull out the inner wiring

Nothing scares you more than when you find out that you accidentally pulled the inner cable out of the frame, because you will find that you can’t get it back, you can’t get a new one. The cables are then re-installed into the bike.

That means you might spend weeks pulling the traces in and out a little bit, tweaking it back and forth, hoping that one day it will magically find its way home – but it’s unlikely.

Treat internal wiring: be careful!

The correct thing to do is to run the cable into a tube that is a little narrower than the frame tube before pulling it out completely, and then put the tube into the frame so the cable doesn’t fall out easily. For new bikes, this method still works, because basically new bikes will have a series of these narrow tubes, but you must be careful when handling them.

10. The straps of the bottle cage are not long enough

Many riders will attach the mini pump to the frame with a clip that fits under the bottle cage. This clip is attached with the bottle cage bolts, but one thing that is often overlooked is that standard bottle cage bolts are generally not as long as you might think.

Some pumps have extended bolts, but most pumps do not. So make sure the thread is long enough to connect to the mounting hole on the frame, usually at least 5mm, if it’s longer than that it’s better. If the thread is not long enough, it will fall out of the frame and you are simply taking a risk.

11. The seat tube is stuck

It’s easy to avoid carbon fiber seatposts getting stuck on aluminum frames. A stuck or very firm seatpost is indeed a very common problem, and it also occurs on bikes with aluminum seatposts and carbon frames. Or on aluminum seatpost and steel bikes.

Use a special anti-tightening paste on carbon fiber parts, don’t use lubricants to avoid this – instead, you should use a special anti-tightening paste for bicycles.

Lubricants and other lubricants can cause carbon fiber bike parts to swell, which means that when they get stuck, it becomes difficult to move them.
